History

The Pikes Peak Gold Rush of 1859 brought gold seekers, farmers and merchants to the area located a few miles south of Denver. A young engineer from New Hampshire named Richard Sullivan Little was hired to lay out an irrigation system to help distribute water to farmers and businesses that didn’t have access to rivers and creeks.
After falling in love with the area, he eventually brought his wife out in 1862 and they both settled in what is now present-day Littleton. The Littles built the Rough and Ready Flour Mill in 1867 with some of their neighbors, which soon became an economic foundation for the entire community. The town of Littleton was incorporated in 1890 with a population of just 245 people.
By the 1950’s and 1960’s, the population soared significantly due to the influx of manufacturing and aerospace businesses which, in turn, resulted in a housing boom.

Education

Public schools in Littleton belong to the Littleton Public School District. For the past 8 years, the district has received the highest accreditation rating from the Colorado Department of Education, the only school district in the Denver metro area to receive this distinction.
