What are the Walls Made of?
The walls are comprised of bricks, blocks or pavers. Blocks can be stacked or interlocking. Pavers and Bricks usually need to be adhered to each other – especially if the wall is above two feet. Walls are used to provide a terraced effect to your yard. When constructed properly, retaining walls last an extremely long time with little to no maintenance.
Retaining Walls Beautify Your Property:
If your property is sloped, the advantages of a retaining wall are obvious. With a retaining wall, you can increase the flat, usable space of your property. You can also create a beautiful terraced look with your property if you desire. There are many options available to property owners when it comes to installation.
Green Mountain frequently builds retaining walls as part of our overall landscape designs.
Types of Landscape Retaining Walls
There are two main types of retaining walls that you can use for landscaping on your Denver metro property – both types are described below.
Natural Stone Retaining Walls
Natural stone retaining walls are comprised of – you guessed it – stone. These natural stones are stacked on top of each other in order to create your wall.
The advantage of having a natural stone wall is that you truly get a one-of-a-kind looking wall. They can be really eye-popping and when done right provides a great contrast to the block retaining walls which are more common and look uniform as all blocks are the same size and meant for stacking.
The major disadvantage with natural stone retaining walls is the cost. Unlike blocks, stones aren’t manufactured specifically for building a wall. As a result, the stones are heavy and difficult to move and cut. This requires more time. In many cases, you can get the stone cut to your specified dimensions to make building the wall a bit easier, but there is still additional time and cost involved in doing so.
Another thing to keep in mind with a natural stone retaining walls is that it requires experience to construct properly. It is a bit of an art form to piece your wall together based on stones of differing dimensions. You also have to keep in mind the purpose of retaining walls which is to act as a support against heavy earth which will be applying pressure on the wall.
Block Retaining Walls
Allan Block
Allan Block is a manufacturer of retaining wall blocks that are used in wall construction. They make different varieties of retaining walls, and the blocks that they make vary based on purpose and style. They actually have 4 different collections of blocks to choose from that are used specifically for the construction of retaining walls.
These retaining wall blocks are comprised of poured concrete, and are very effective for building large retaining walls that can withstand a lot of force and stay in place. The blocks can come in a variety of different colors to meet your needs.
Windsor Stone Block
Windsor stone is another retaining wall block manufacturer. They create blocks for retaining walls that are used for less demanding purposes.
While also constructed of poured concrete like Allan Blocks, the Windsor retaining wall blocks are smaller and easier to handle. They’re ideally suited for situations where your wall is two feet high or less.
Components that Windsor makes for retaining walls not only the blocks, but also thin concrete block caps that you can put on top. These caps provide a nice, smooth level top to your wall.
Drainage and Retaining Walls
For retaining walls that are built on slopes, it is extremely important that a french drain is installed as part of the retaining wall system. You must have proper drainage to whisk water away from the wall. If drainage isn’t properly accounted for, water can build up behind the wall resulting in intense pressure on the wall and possible catastrophic failure.
French drains consist of trenches that are dug behind a retaining wall. A porous pipe is placed in the trench – with gravel on top of the pipe. As water comes down the slope towards the retaining wall, the water is captured by the drain and diverted around the retaining wall. This is a highly effective drainage solution that can extend the life of your wall.
