What is a Landscape Designer?

Landscape Designer Defined

Landscape Designers focus on residential projects and don't require any sort of licensing by the state in order to work on home landscaping projects

Unlike landscape architects, landscape designers aren’t required to be licensed by the state of Colorado. That said, many landscape designers may have a similar background to landscape architects. They may even hold a degree in landscape architecture – they just may have not opted to take the requisite exams to be licensed.

Job Size

In general, landscape designers work on smaller projects than landscape architects. Landscape designers will typically focus mostly on residential projects as opposed to commercial or public projects.

The APLD

The Association of Professional Landscape Designers is a membership-based organization based out of Harrisburg, PA that promotes the profession of landscaping design. There are various paid membership levels – each is based on the landscaping experience of the member. The organization has a certification process which evaluates the submitted work of the applicant with regards to drawings, photos and design. Members also must complete 30 hours of continuing education every three years in order to maintain their membership.

APLD Members in Colorado

A quick search of the APLD.org website indicates that there are only about 3 members within Denver metro that have an active APLD membership.

Your Residential Landscaping Needs

While you may wish to consider a member of the APLD for your next project, it isn’t essential. While APLD members to specialize in residential (and not commercial) landscape design, you can likely find other suitable contractors for your landscaping project that don’t require APLD membership.
You can get great landscaping designs that meet and even exceed your needs without hiring a member of the APLD. See all of our services to learn how we can overdeliver on your next landscaping project.
