Overview

Situated between Boulder and downtown Denver, the city of Broomfield is located along US 36 and covers 34 square miles. The median age is 37.7 years old and the population as of the most recent census is 72,000+ making it Colorado’s 15th largest city. The climate is relatively mild with an average maximum temperature in July (warmest month) being 87 degrees Fahrenheit and an average minimum temperature in December (coldest month) being 17 degrees Fahrenheit.

History

There is no definitive information about where the city got its name, however, it is thought to have come from the broomcorn grown in the area that farmers sold for the manufacturing of brooms and whisk brooms.

Following its incorporation in 1961, the city continued growing and expanding across four different counties: Boulder, Jefferson, Adams and Weld. It wasn’t until the 1990’s that city leaders started discussing the idea of creating a separate county to help alleviate the complications and political differences that were inherent with the involvement of so many government entities. An amendment was finally passed in 1998 and, following a 3-year transition, Broomfield became Colorado’s 64th and smallest county in 2001.

Public schools are still divided among several school districts with the two largest being Adams 12 and Boulder Valley School Districts. In addition to the two large public high schools, two middle schools and eight elementary schools, there are also three private schools and two K-12 charter schools within the city.
